Traditional country garden

The brief

This old property is full of character and located in a quiet lane, the garden extends to approx. 1 acre.

Create a garden for a couple with teenage children who no longer need swings and trampolines. An aesthetically pleasing design for the whole of the east facing aspect of the garden. The kitchen overlooks part of this area and the client wanted a pleasing view right down to the orchard beyond.

My design

I divided the area into ‘rooms’, and included arches, pergolas and gazebos.

Rooms include a cottage style design that can be seen from the kitchen with a central circular bed. The area (when mature) will be separated by a tall shrub border with a pergola walk. The walk leads to the more formally planted room which is viewed from the terrace. Steps and a border surround have been added to connect it with the rest of the garden.

The existing terrace leading from a sitting room seemed outside the rest of the garden, it has been made to feel included and suitable for entertaining by adding steps and a border.

The Result

Opportunities for discovery are provided by various focal points throughout the garden and a pleasing view to the orchard. Vehicular access has been maintained and several drain covers and a cesspit have been disguised.

” Your scheme flows from one part of the garden to another easily.I now have a beautiful view from my kitchen window.”
